Name: Charlevoix Lecture Series Presents: Nancy Maas
Date: August 7, 2014
Time: 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
Nancy Neaher Maas and her family enjoyed summers in the Charlevoix area for many years. Now that she and her husband have a new home in Charlevoix, she is able to spend more time in a place that has inspired her art for so long. The woods, the lakes, and the quaint architecture of northern Michigan prompt her to paint impressions in watercolor as well as to construct art from a unique weaving method she concocted twenty-five years ago. These watercolor weavings often depict the animated vistas of sky, sail and water on Lake Michigan. For Nancy, there?s no equal to the aquamarine purity of northern waters, nor to the sunsets, and even the storms, which characterize ?up north? summers. As a signature member of the San Diego Watercolor Society, the Taos Society of Watercolorists, and a new member of the Fort Worth Southwest Watercolor Association (SWA) Nancy has exhibited in many venues. These include upstate NY ? where Contemporary Trends, Ithaca, features selections on a permanent basis and where she was the official artist of the nationally known Ithaca Festival ? Washington D.C., Arizona and, most recently, in north Texas, including Elm St. Studio, Keller. In Michigan Nancy participated in the Charlevoix Art Fair for nearly a decade. She exhibited at Judy Kern?s former gallery on Bridge Street, and is currently at the Ward Gallery, Petoskey. Her work has been featured in Traverse Magazine, American Artist, Watercolor Magazine, Coastal Living and other publications, and is found in many private collections nationwide. While painting has been a lifelong passion, Nancy also holds a Ph.D. (Stanford University) in African art and taught art history for over 25 years at universities in Michigan and New York State. Longstanding ties to Africa and to Latin America continue to influence Nancy?s approaches to art making in subtle ways. See her website: www.nmaas.com.
