Harbor History Talk - Tragedy on Everest

Mount Everest is the highest and likely the most famous mountain in the world. Sadly, the expedition to climb that famed mountain in May 1996 became the worst tragedy in the mountain’s history. Lou Kasischke was there. The Harbor Springs Area Historical Society is honored to welcome Kasischke to speak as part of our Harbor History Talk series on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 5:30 pm. Kasischke will share his experience as a member of Rob Hall’s May 1996 Mount Everest expedition and about the force that brought him home alive with a story he could tell. Although this tragic expedition has been documented in other accounts as well as a recent motion picture, Kasischke wrote his personal experience and tucked it away in a file cabinet for 17 years. In 2014 he finally published his very personal story, “After the Wind: Tragedy on Everest—One Survivor’s Story.” Join us as Kasischke talks and shows dramatic images about the story and about what led him to publish his book, which is in equal measure an epic adventure and a love story. Kasischke’s talk begins at 5:30 pm in the second floor Anton Library of the Harbor Springs History Museum, 349 E Main Street, and refreshments will be provided.
