Event Description:
Northern Michigan is a unique and challenging area with regard to weather forecasting - primarily because of the Great Lakes. We will explore the forecasting challenges and data bases used to support the forecasts. Also included will be the effects of lake breezes, topography, snowflake size and ice cover upon our daily weather. Additionally, the course will cover the nationwide weather observing network and how that contributes to the work of the National Weather Service as well as a walk through of some of the more famous storms of the 20th century, providing the weather background which, in many cases, led to shipping disasters. When signing up for this first class, you are also signing up for the next three. The next classes are : October 27 - Forecast Challenges November 3 - Weather Spotters November 10 - Great Storms on the Great Lakes
