There will be a prelude performance of five soloists beginning at 5:40 pm and the formal concert will begin at 6 pm. The concert will include the beginner and intermediate classes, the Suzuki program students, private lesson students, the Dorothy Gerber Youth Orchestra and The Cummings Quartet. After seven months of study including a Winter Practice Olympics, the DGSP students will have ample opportunity to demonstrate their progress. For the calendar year of 2017-18 the DGSP program was represented in Boyne City, Charlevoix, East Jordan, Petoskey and on Beaver Island. For the 2018-19 calendar year the program will grow to include Harbor Light Christian School, and Pellston Elementary School with plans in the works to expand into Alanson and Harbor Springs. The DGSP, a treasured source of regional music education for more than 18 years, is now administered by the Charlevoix Circle of Arts. Dr. David Reimer, the music director of the DGSP is joined by a team of teachers who have prepared the students for this opportunity, including John Van Patten, Nancy Koski, Peter Tolias, Beth Deininger, Susan Raguse and Elizabeth Bert. It is the mission of the DGSP to provide exceptional locally based string music education throughout the year. The Dorothy Gerber Strings Program is a celebration of the legacy of Dorothy Gerber, made possible by the benevolence of her daughter, Gay Cummings. Generations of northwestern Michigan students are indebted to Mrs. Cummings for making this education a reality. We believe it is appropriate that we celebrate her contribution to this region by naming the faculty string quartet, The Cummings Quartet in her honor. As the students reach the culmination of the school year, thoughts turn to the summer for which the DGSP has a variety of camp and Summer School of Music options which can be found on the program's website www.gerberstrings.org. A portion of the private lessons opportunity was provided for by the Charlevoix County Community Foundation.
